What is Breast Implants?Type of Breast Implants
A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or salt water solution known as saline. It is designed for managing treatment of augmentation, reconstruction, and revision patients.
Patient have the option to select the size, shape, and texture of the implant the wish to enhance the look of their breast.

Type of Breast Implants
There are basically 2 type of breast implant,

Saline-Filled Breast Implants
Saline Implant are made up of silicone shell with a filling valve filled with salt water solution known as saline. Saline implants are the most frequently used for breast augmentation surgeries.

Type of saline-filled breast implants:
There are  three types of saline-filled breast implants:

  • Most saline implants are single lumen, that is filled during the operation with a fixed volume of saline through a valve. There are no adjustments of the saline volume after the operation.

  • The second type is also a single lumen implant that is filled at the time of surgery with saline through a valve. However, this type of implant allows for saline volume adjustment after the operation.

  • The third type is a single lumen pre-filled saline implant, which are filled by implant manufacturer with a fixed volume of saline.

Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants
Silicone implants
are made up of silicone shell that is filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel, a soft-solid substance. The shell surface (smooth versus textured), shape (round or shaped), profile (how far it sticks out), volume (size), shell thickness, and number of shell lumens for silicone implants varied and most of the implants are un-adjustable.

Type of silicone gel-filled breast implants:
There are two types of silicone implants:

  • Silicone gel.

  • Cohesive gel - this gel is thicker.

Saline Implants versus Silicone Implants

  • Silicone implants have a more natural look and feel than saline implants because its texture is similar to breast tissue.

  • Silicon Implants rupture are harder to detect because silicone gel may leak into the breast adjacent areas without a noticeable difference.

  • Silicone implants have a higher rate of capsular contracture.

  • Silicone implants have a higher deflation rate.

  • It is more difficult to replace a rupture silicone implant.

  • Saline implants rupture can be detect almost immediately.

  • Repairing a rupture saline implant is more easier.

  • Saline implants are less risky than silicone implant. In the case of leaking for saline implant, only saline or salt water would be leaked into the body, as opposed to silicone gel, a chemical substance.
